  • github had (has?) free pro accounts for students back when github didn’t offer private repos for free. if you forgot to cancel your student account when you graduated, github would simply hold your private repos hostage unless you paid for them. no option given to simply make them public repos. i would have lost mountains of my work had they not fucked up and unlocked my repos for a couple hours, which allowed me to clone everything i didn’t have locally and migrate to gitlab.

so basically, sometimes those student offers build in scam tactics.

  • sticking an asterisk in place of one letter doesn’t mean you aren’t still just saying it, it’s like when people upload movie scenes to youtube where someone gets shot in the head but they blur the gun like that makes it not still just a scene of someone getting shot. if it’s too difficult to say “porn” and “fucking,” there are other terms for those things. saying them and pretending an asterisk makes it different just comes across as being too immature to even being talking about it in the first place.

  • “works great” as in… how? it’s all way too slow and volitile and cumbersome to handle the global financial system, so nobody actually uses it as currency. in what sense does it “work great?” in theory it works great, but in practice, not so much. nobody wants to pay their rent with bitcoin if the price has shifted down 20% by the time it gets processed.

in practice it’s also really easy to link your crypto transfers to you. it only takes one opsec failure and you’re not anonymous anymore. so i really don’t think it works “great.”
