  • From what I remember, the original study was indeed about cockroach “milk”, from a species that births live babies and feeds them a slurry of crystals and proteins. That slurry is the stuff that is technically more “nutritious”

I don’t think anyone is actually trying to get humans to consume the stuff. There are a lot of mammals that produce milk that is more nutrient dense than cow milk, it’s just not as easy to collect it + theres little reason to do so

  • Here are some more fun ones:

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Coccyx

The term coccyx is derived from the ancient Greek word κόκκυξ[18][19] kokkyx “cuckoo”;[20] the latter is attested in the writings of the Greek physician Herophilus to denote the end of the vertebral column.[21] This Greek name for the cuckoo was applied as the last three or four bones of the coccyx resemble the beak of this bird,[18][21][22][23] when viewed from the side

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hippocampus

The earliest description of the ridge running along the floor of the inferior horn of the lateral ventricle comes from the Venetian anatomist Julius Caesar Aranzi (1587), who likened it first to a silkworm and then to a seahorse (Latin hippocampus, from Greek ἱππόκαμπος (latinised: ìppókampos) from ἵππος (ippos), ‘horse’ + κάμπος (kámpos), ‘sea monster’)

Not as fun, but still mildly interesting:

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Deltoid_muscle

It is called so because it is in the shape of the Greek capital letter delta (Δ)

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Serratus_anterior_muscle

The muscle is named from Latin: serrare = to saw (referring to the shape); and anterior = on the front side of the body.

  • I was going to suggest covering them up, as a legal way to turn them off without physically dismantling, since they’re technically not college property. But that’s exactly what the campus staff did and Flock kept coming to uncover them? Lol wtf

I’d bet if this was a larger college/university, they wouldn’t have pulled something like this.

Something good did come out of this. It is a concrete example of how the company will behave if you sign a contract with them. Public officials and administrators will be more likely to care if they risk losing their power like this. It also makes it clear that you’re not paying Flock to “help” your own region, you’re doing it to help people in other regions.

Elgin Community College staff notified Flock in October 2025 that they wanted to cancel their contract and have the cameras taken down. Within a day, Heinrich said, Flock rejected the request and refused to uninstall the equipment on the basis that the company had not breached their agreement.

College officials reached out again in December 2025 and said they would pay for the remaining five months of the contract — they just wanted the cameras taken down.

“We never received a response back from Flock,” Heinrich said.

That’s when things got weird. Heinrich said Elgin Community College staff began to cover the cameras using black trash bags and zip ties so that they would not be able to capture footage. But workers in an unmarked vehicle, which Heinrich assumed belonged to Flock, repeatedly removed the coverings.

This strange dance continued, Heinrich said, until Elgin Community College’s contract with Flock expired in April this year and the company uninstalled the cameras for good.

    TIL

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brigitte_Macron

It was at the after-school drama club of Lycée la Providence where she and Emmanuel Macron first met.[13] She was in charge of the after-school theater club he attended when he was 15 alongside her own daughter Laurence who was in his class.[14] Their relationship has attracted controversy, as she is his senior by close to 25 years, and he was a minor; Macron has described it as “a love often clandestine, often hidden, misunderstood by many before imposing itself”.

In 1993, at the age of 39, she met the 15-year-old Emmanuel Macron in Lycée la Providence,[40][41] where she was a teacher and he was a student and a classmate of her daughter.[42] Brigitte divorced Auzière in January 2006 and married Macron on 20 October 2007.

  • IMO that’s not the issue

The issue is the lack of safeguards. In our rush to call out the dad based on the headline, we shouldn’t let Google and the banks off the hook. The dad should have set limits on the card/account and paid closer attention to the kid’s view/ad activities, but both google and the banks benefitted from the poor design/usability issues that led to this.

EDIT: Since it was the company card, maybe the dad couldn’t have set limits on there. He used the company card on an older purchase, and since it was tied to his account, google offered the card as a payment option when the kid went to boost his ad. While I’m at it, screw the advertising industry that made YouTube into the mess it is now.

    As for this bit

why is a 9 year old even allowed to post to YouTube

I remember about 15 years ago, a lot of kids wanted to post gameplay videos and music/art they made to YouTube. Some parents handled that poorly yes, but others took the time to watch the videos and approve them before anything was uploaded.

Kids want to explore their interests and it can be healthy to explore it with them, and teach them things along the way. Telling them no outright might push them to do it anyway, but this time without supervision.

  • My friend managed to find a compatible eraser at some stationery store while travelling, but he couldn’t tell me exactly which one he went to. This was before we could just order everything online, The best part was that you could use up the eraser a little bit to get a snug fit, you can’t do that with the yolks.

I don’t know why more stores didn’t carry those erasers
