I think the millions of slaves in America would disagree when the British empire outlawed slavery 30 years earlier without having a civil war over the issue.
I am not the most knowledgeable on this subject but didnt they just do what amounts to slavery in their colonies like in India? They had colonial rule over India until like sometime in the 1900s didn’t they? Like they were an imperial nation, I’m not sure it really matters if the the exploitation and bloodshed happened within their own landmass
