I get wanting a safe space from persecution.

But echo chambers are dangerous and can really distort your reality. I personally find going from a safe space/echo chamber to reality very jarring and much more conflicting than from a relatively safe space with some conflict to reality.

By shutting it all out I’d argue you are risking hurting yourself unless you can guarantee a safe space in every aspect of life which is very difficult.

We all want them absent. But then it sort of defeats the point of OPs post saying that BlueSky is filled with bigots when the reality is everywhere has them.

Just because you are not aware doesn’t mean they don’t exist.

Reading into blahaj.zoje more, plenty of queer folk are friendly and supportive, but plenty are also pieces of shit. Sometimes you may also not realize if you create an echo chamber what is acceptable and what bleeds into extremist rhetoric.

Yep. He was the Elon Musk of those years. Great at marketing but an asshole to work for and likely would have started spreading his insane crap at some point to the masses.

He was very much the Elon Musk of his times, and it’s very possible he would have gone down the same route of extremist views and decisions that completely failed because of his egoism.

Some interesting points, and some things I disagree with.

Firstly it’s annoying he keeps calling it his idea and trying to enforce this concept that the current internet needs to align with his original goals. That’s stupid and ignores that things will go where they go, he can’t control them.

So his first point about centralisation being an issue isn’t that big a grievance. But his second point rings true - the issues around our data and advertising have grown significantly and the Web is getting much worse as a result.

I actually think the solution is just government needs to step in and regulate it, along the lines of what the EU is doing. Realistically I think that’s the only solution that’ll help. Doing some grassroots movement and hoping it picks up steam is just unrealistic. Like looking at Lemmy and Mastadon - they’re great but at this pace they’ll never take over the other giants in the space. You need someone to step in and force the change.

But yes, I get that the whole thing is free and donation driven. At the same time, if it’s free then it’s free. Why would you pay for something that’s free, sort of defies the point. If it can’t sustain itself being free then it can’t be free.

Maybe it’s an autistic thing but it’s just logically irrational.
