Technology@lemmy.world•German court sends Volkswagen execs to prison over Dieselgate scandalEnglish
1·5 months agoThe point is that the US has gathered enough evidence to get indictments against them. Germany has access to that same evidence and has very similar laws that were violated – but has done basically nothing.

They are all guilty as fuck.

34·5 months agoDespite what the headline says, no execs went to jail. The two who were punished with jail terms were middle management.
Martin Winterkorn, the CEO, will probably avoid any serious consequences.

101·1 year agoThe design of the car heavily influences driver behavior, so you can’t hand-wave away with “Tesla drivers are idiots”. A major issue is that the FSD, sensors, cameras, etc. all give a false sense of security, leading to drivers engaging in more risky behavior. The term for this is Risk Compensation.

13·1 year agoWhile I know things are generally more expensive in Switzerland, $685,000 is crazy expensive for just 18 kW (48 panels).
Sorry, but it is mainly Biden’s policies. The administration has largely ignored white collar crime, especially when it comes to things like price collusion, antitrust, etc.
Case in point: the DOJ lawsuit against RealPage software (which landlords were using to collude on apartment prices). The company was engaged in extremely serious criminal activity, but the DOJ did not file any criminal charges.

Technology@lemmy.world•Leading the world in technology and ecological transit.. on 3.5"English
7·2 years agoIt is actually much worse than that. The problem they are having is that street-running LRT trains get stuck in traffic, causing bunching and other scheduling issues. The obvious solution is to get cars completely out of the way of the trains. But despite an official “transit first” policy, the SFMTA won’t do that. So instead they will spend >$100 million on a new signal system, which will map train locations in real-time simply to tell dispatchers what they already know – that the trains are stuck in traffic.

NCTD in San Diego recently had a meeting about a proposed H2 railcar project for the Sprinter line. The H2 fuel costs are running 4-16x more expensive relative to what was originally planned. So nice to see scarce public transit dollars funding H2 research 🙄
