And that it had wholly transformed in the process and become something else. It surprised me, and bummed me out that I was wrong. And that it was not the good thing I once thought it was.

But to answer your question - that a fringe ideology would so quickly become a required one. That an ideological system would so quickly sweep and change the culture. And that those opposed would be handled so rudely.
I had always participated believing that it was about acceptance. Only to find that it was mostly full of the same people who treated homosexuals poorly looking for their new acceptable punching bag.
