I think we are wasting our lives to a certain degree. As kids, we expected more from life than sitting in front of a computer to feed the family. And sitting at a computer is seen as one of the “good” jobs.
Long time linux user and tinkerer. Currently working as a devops engineer. Very positive to the idea of decentralized internet platforms. :)

Consumers arent really asking for AI but its being used to push new hardware and make previous hardware feel old. Eventually everyone has AI on their phone, most of it unused.

Such a chad move. Respect!
I don’t use Google anymore except for Google maps in my car. :) I guess they can spy on where I’m driving. But no search history.
Apple likes to control the entire ecosystem, and wanted to make their own processors to make them more efficient and produce less heat. They succeeded too, the M2 and M3 chips are incredible.
So I think they would have ditched anyone, but Intel probably also made it easier by being so bad. :)
The point is to see the value of the stock go up, so when you sell, you make a profit. Some people buy and sell daily, some do it yearly or only when they need the money.
Money needs to be working for you somewhere to make up for inflation, at the very least.

But fastmail is not exactly private since it’s hosted in Australia, part of the five eyes pact. Maybe that’s why they are ok with it.

My kid was using first Linux on a laptop and then mac, and he wanted to go back to Linux where things make sense. He felt the mac was really confusing in where the files were. He also loved the integrated Software app where he can point and click install everything.
Now he is learning the terminal… :)
I think there is plenty of people who think macs are a pain in the ass too. Depends on what you are used to.
I think eventually, some people will be OK with paying 5 dollars per month for a YouTube competitor that is better than the original. Much like Kagi is doing for search engines. It won’t be for the majority since they still expect free stuff and no ads, which doesn’t work.
Humanity slowly goes insane… :)
The world is not McDonald’s though. But yes, there is a trend towards sterile clean environments with muted colors.
mrmanager@lemmy.todayto Technology@lemmy.world•Majority of Americans now use ad blockersEnglish5·2 years agoI’m wondering about her reason for not using one too. What is the advantage?
She thinks the web can’t exist without ads? It can, because it did once.
Just another reason to not have a YouTube account. If you use Newpipe, you can subscribe to feeds anyway without any YouTube account.
mrmanager@lemmy.todayOPto Technology@lemmy.world•A peaceful protest against Web Environment IntegrityEnglish1·2 years agoIt’s ad blocking and entire operating systems, or computers configured in any way they don’t like.
If this goes through, they can force you to install any plugins they wish, or disable any plugins they wish. Or make sure you don’t run Linux and only Windows or Mac. They can force you to have your camera on. They can do anything since they make the rules.
No innovation will take place. Competing browsers or software will not be allowed or manipulated into marketed as “unsafe”.
This is a takeover of the open web stack as we know it.
mrmanager@lemmy.todayto Technology@lemmy.world•Far-right figures, including Nazi supporters, anti-gay extremists, and white supremacists, are flocking to ThreadsEnglish0·2 years agoIt’s not about that… I don’t know why it’s so hard to understand the psychology here. They feel strongly that something is wrong and want to fight it. That’s it.
Again, not supporting it at all but you should at least understand that they are not so different from us. They just grew up around hate for these things and continue to feel hate for these things.
If they would have grown up in a different environment, I don’t think they would even care about any of this.
I think we actually get to understand now how Hitler came to power. I remember in school, I was mystified how such an hateful man could become a leader of a country. Now I understand.
History will most likely repeat itself and humanity needs a big war to once again remember what hate leads to.
It just sucks for the ones who already learned that lesson from basic history.
